No, not the rodent type, I’m talking hair rats, also known as hair rolls or hair fillers. these little things are one of the secret, rarely talked about tools, used in creating not only vintage, but also modern hairstyles. Of course you can spend hours back-combing, teasing, spraying and rolling, to achieve victory rolls, a rolled fringe or a chignon, or … you can use a rat! There are numerous videos out there, on Youtube, instructing in the fine art of constructing these styles, most of which claim that it’s ‘so easy’ or ‘just needs a bit of practice’. Unfortunately, if you have fine hair, no patience, weak arms or are generally not very good with hair (there’s no shame, we can’t all be great at everything!), then rats might be your answer. they are, quite simply, sausages made of foam or net, which you use like a curler to form rolls, in your hair, before pinning in place and fooling everybody! So, ‘where do I get these magical things?’ I hear you ask. Well, lucky for you, they’re really easy to make, especially as Primark are currently stocking bun doughnuts for £1. Simply cut the doughnut into whatever size you require (small for victory rolls and larger for fringe rolls), put a couple of stitches along the edge, to hold in place, and away you go! It’s best to use a colour near to your hair colour to allow for camouflage but if you’re fully covering the rat, then the colour isn’t too important. Here’s a picture of some rats I made last night, in prep for the hen party photo-shoot, next week.
