Facial Skin Care
As I’ve mentioned, I’m usually on a tight budget so I had be careful where I spent and where I saved. I’d kept up using the coconut oil as a night time moisturiser and body oil but I did find it a bit heavy for my face, sometimes. I also needed a good waterproof mascara removing cleanser and a day cream. I had a flash of inspiration one day when I realised I still needed an oil based cleanser to get rid of the mascara and then I thought, why not use coconut oil! So that’s what I now do. I slather the stuff all over my face, including my eyes, and then I wipe it all off with a warm ( not hot ) flannel. I know, a flannel! It seems old fashioned but it’s nothing that Liz Earle hasn’t been preaching with her Hot-Cloth Cleanser for years. I have a few flannels on standby as it needs to be very clean (they can be breeding grounds for bacteria). For this reason I only ever use my flannel for my face, and nowhere else. After a bit of research in to comedogenic oils (basically, how much different oils clog your pores) I settled on sweet almond oil as it has a low comedogenic level and, as luck would have it, is super cheap! You only need a few drops for your whole face and I wear a headband to keep my hair off my face, for a few minutes after applying, otherwise it can make your hair a bit greasy. As I’d saved on the sweet almond oil for a night time moisturiser, I decided I could afford to spend a bit more on a day cream and settled on Dr Organic’s Rose Otto Day Cream. Whilst it’s not quite 100% organic, it is free of chemicals, and it smells gorgeous. It’s quite light but it’s perfect under make-up. As it’s chemical free, it doesn’t have any SPF content but I figured that’s not really a problem as I spend most of my life in a dark theatre and I’m really fair skinned and avoid the sun like the plague. Of course, if I know I’m going to be out in the sun, Clinique City block is still my favourite and I’m willing to overlook a few chemicals, for a few days of the year, to avoid skin cancer.
